Tooli Art acrylic markers: my favourite markers for mystery coloring

I have been using them since 2024, exclusively for mystery coloring books, and they have become my go-to markers. Tooli Art are acrylic ink markers, which sets them apart from regular water-based felt tips or alcohol markers. In practice, this makes a big difference: coverage is opaque, colors are vivid, and there is absolutely no bleed-through on paper.

They do not work quite like a regular marker, there are a few things to learn at the start. But once you understand how they work, the results are genuinely impressive.

Quick facts

  • Brand: Tooli Art
  • Ink type: Acrylic
  • Markers per pack: 22
  • Non-toxic: Yes
  • Replacement nibs: Included in each pack
  • Recommended nib size: 0.7 mm for coloring
  • Storage: Horizontal

A pack system by color family: a near-unlimited palette

This is one of the biggest strengths of Tooli Art: markers are sold in themed packs of 22 colors, organized by color family. There is a blues pack, a violets pack, a yellows pack, a browns pack, an oranges pack, a pinks pack, a reds pack, a greens pack, a grays pack, a skin tones pack, a neons pack, an earth tones pack, and Essential packs that bring together a variety of shades, great for getting started.

In practice, this means you can build your collection gradually based on what you color. If you mostly do landscapes, start with greens and blues. If you do portraits, get the skin tones pack. And if you want everything, buy the packs one by one over time.

Why 0.7 mm is the ideal nib size for coloring

Tooli Art offers different nib sizes, but for mystery coloring I recommend the 0.7 mm. It is the versatile option: fine enough to fill small sections without going outside the lines, wide enough to cover large areas without taking forever. With this size, there is no need to buy a thick nib for big zones and a fine one for details. One size does everything.

Acrylic ink: perfect coverage, zero bleed-through

Unlike alcohol markers that easily soak through paper, Tooli Art acrylic markers do not bleed at all, even with multiple layers. On the paper of mystery coloring books, this is a huge advantage: you can go over the same area twice without risking damage to the page underneath.

And two layers is exactly what I recommend. The first coat already gives solid coverage, but the second adds a depth and saturation that looks so much better. Drying time between layers is quick, so it does not add much extra time to your coloring session.

What you need to know before you start

Acrylic markers do not work quite the same as regular felt tips. Here are the key things to know:

  • Prime the nib before use: press the tip 2 to 3 times against scrap paper until the ink starts to flow. This is normal, it is how these markers work.
  • Store horizontally: so the ink stays evenly distributed and the nib does not dry out on one side.
  • No panic if you forget the cap: unlike what you might expect, the ink does not dry out if the marker is left uncapped for a moment, precisely because you need to press to activate it. A reassuring detail.
  • If a nib gets clogged: every pack includes replacement nibs. Pull it out, swap it, and you are good to go. No need to rinse with water if you do not want to bother.

What I like

  • Opaque acrylic ink: perfect coverage, very intense colors
  • Zero bleed-through on paper, even with multiple layers
  • Quick drying between coats
  • Themed pack system: choose exactly the colors you need
  • Versatile 0.7 mm nib: handles both large and small areas
  • Replacement nibs included in every pack
  • Does not dry out if left uncapped briefly
  • Non-toxic
  • Good longevity

What to keep in mind

  • Cost adds up quickly if you buy several packs
  • Priming the nib at the start can catch beginners off guard
  • Horizontal storage required (worth planning for if space is limited)

My final verdict

Tooli Art are my favourite markers for mystery coloring and I do not see that changing. The acrylic finish delivers a quality that regular felt tips simply cannot match: deep colors, clean coverage, paper intact even after two coats. The themed pack system is a genuinely smart idea that lets you build exactly the collection you need without wasting anything.

If you want to get started, begin with an Essential pack for a varied range of colors, then add themed packs based on what you color most. And remember one thing: always do two coats. The difference is night and day.
