That is exactly what makes this review worth reading.

Book overview

Strengths

The artwork is genuinely beautiful. It is the first thing you notice when flipping through, and it holds up page after page.
The book is printed on one side only, and that changes everything: alcohol markers are finally usable without ruining the coloring on the back. This is rare enough to deserve a mention.
Every design comes with its own color chart, printed right on the page. No hunting for your shades for ten minutes before you start.
The white areas are filled in, meaning they are printed white rather than left blank. No need to reach for a white marker to cover them.
The paper is premium, matching the quality of everything else.

Worth noting

These are not flaws, but things worth knowing before you buy.

The lines separating the zones are dark. They can be tricky to cover completely, but in exchange the zones are instantly readable. It is a trade-off, and a defensible one.
The designs are highly detailed. I personally love it, the finished result is far less flat than with wide open areas, but if you are after quick coloring, this is not the book.
Many shades of the same color are required. Plan for a generous palette rather than a box of twelve.
Some parts of the drawings come pre-colored, simply because the illustrator had no room to fit a color code there. This is intentional and normal, not a printing defect.
There are no double-page spreads.

Coloring page examples

The solution pages give a good sense of the finished look and the level of detail. This is where you understand why the result is so rich.

Personal verdict

I am not especially a Winx fan, and yet I have to admit the artwork is truly lovely. I can already feel this one becoming a favorite. I have spotted several illustrations I want to do with colored pencils, either my Caran d'Ache Luminance or my Faber-Castell Polychromos.

I cannot quite explain why this book pulls me towards pencils, especially since those dark dividing lines will probably be hard to cover properly with them. I may end up mixing, Ohuhu alcohol markers for the flat areas and pencils for the finishing touches. It would be a shame not to use markers when a single-sided book comes along so rarely.

Whether you are a Winx fan or not at all, like me, go for it. This book is beautiful and, above all, very well thought out. It is rare to find filled white areas, single-sided printing and gorgeous artwork in the same volume.
